Google Meet vs Zoom - Which is Better?
Comparison of Zoom and
Google Meet, the main features, how to use each platform, and which one to
choose.
When it comes to video
calling nowadays, Zoom has become the most popular choice abroad. But now that
Google announces it's free Google Meet, I think it's time to dive into it and
see how it actually compares to Zoom, and which video calling services you
might want to use.
Now Google has been
actually making video calls for as long as Zoom has been in business. Both had
their initial product launches in 2013, however Zoom has also historically been
focused on business conferences for education and companies, competing with
other vendors such as WebEx and Cisco's Bluejeans.
The first Google video
called a product was Hangouts and it was mainly focused on the consumer market
to rival Skype. Over the years, Google launched additional connections first
with products like Google Duo and then finally Google Meet in 2017 which
targeted Google G Suite Enterprise customers. Fast forward to just a few months
ago and it looks like Zoom has taken over the world in a matter of days when
the Covid-19 pandemic struck.
Google Meet vs. Zoom
Comparison of Zoom and
Google Meet, the main features, how to use each platform, and which one to
choose.
Availability: Google Meet vs. Zoom
You may ask why this
happened. Well of all the video calling services out there, Zoom is the easiest
to use when in fact you are trying to enter a meeting, you just have to
download an app and put an icon and you are in the meeting now, this of course
led to the infamous problem that got its own name Zoom bombing where it was
People who were not originally invited to a meeting will have access to the
meeting passcode and will stream inappropriate videos on famous people.
Now while this Zoom has a
PC app, you can only use Zoom in a browser, although there are quite a few
features missing from the web client such as viewing gallery recording meeting
scheduling once or recurring meeting pulling sharing live broadcast and
commenting on whiteboard and all chat Contact list and settings toggle.
While Google Meet works
in any modern browser on a computer like Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari,
there is no app to download for computers and it is well integrated now with
Gmail also Google Calendar When creating an invitation on Google Calendar, it
only takes you. One click to add the Google Meet invite link.
Meeting time: Google Meet vs. Zoom
Zoom Zoom Calls has since
added some security features to prevent this during dead Zoom calls that are
easy to use and free that don't last forever and if you used your free Zoom
account you probably have already reached the 40-minute time limit for a Zoom
meeting. Also if you try Calling to a Zoom meeting through a phone line can be
an additional cost and this is one of the main differences between a Google
meet and a zoom.
Google Meet has set a
time limit of 60 minutes for up to 100, but between now and September this
limit has been raised to 24 hours per meeting. Another big difference between
them are two platforms are that with Google Meet, you have to have a Google
account and with zoom, You don't need to have a zoom account to join a meeting,
just download an app and place it in an icon, and you're in the meeting.
User Interface: Google Meet vs. Zoom
Well that's a little bit
less about the big differences between these two platforms, so let's now take a
look at the UX and UI of Google Meet and Zoom and how they compare when you go
to google.com.
In the Zoom app you see a
very simple screen you can start a meeting immediately or enter the meeting
icon to join an existing meeting You also have the option on the right side
Schedule a meeting when you launch the Zoom application on the desktop that you
present with a simple layout button to start a new meeting Scheduling an
upcoming meeting Join a meeting Screen sharing is present When starting a
meeting on Zoom you are presented with a simple user interface, on the left
side of the bottom part is a bar. You have controls to turn the video and
microphone on and off, you now have a safety button that when you click on it
gives you quick actions you can take Make your meeting safer like enable
Waiting room, where people are. Want to join your meeting Will wait until you
agree to enter the meeting, you can also toggle it on and off whether you want
to allow an extension so that participants can share the chat on the screen,
rename themselves or unmute themselves From there there are buttons to see the
participants open the chat and learn That you can send individual chat messages
to specific contacts in a Zoom call as well as send messages to the whole group
in the call which is great to also have a button to record the meeting also add
reactions.
You can change the
meeting view in the upper right corner when you have multiple participants in
your meeting with Gallery view as the most popular and the view that makes Zoom
look like Zoom Now to get the awesome Zoom in background replace feature on
Mac, click enlarge our preferences and then default background here You will be
able to create a default background or use your own image as a background, and
these are just some of the main popular images zoom features out there, of
course a lot of other settings and preferences you can enable with zoom.
Now, let's take a look at
Google Meet when you click start a meeting that takes you to a comment screen
where you can double make sure your hair is fine then decide whether or not you
want to keep it or not the camera and microphone are on before entering the
meeting When you click during the meeting, you will see that it is done Offer
you fewer options than Zoom The lower left corner shows you the meeting details
that you can expand, Center the bottom bar or the buttons to turn the
microphone and camera on and off as well as end the call, you can click the
People icon in the top right hand to see all the meeting participants and you
can also reach To chat in this area of the user interface, you can also send
messages and links to everyone involved in your call. But note that you cannot
send messages to an individual. Contact participants in the right corner of the
bottom bar, you will see a comment when this button is enabled.
Google will automatically
do a live translation of everything said at the meeting which is something Zoom
cannot do right now even though they have a closed caption feature where anyone
can write in it Closed captions for something like giving a webinar will allow
you to share your current screen and if You were using a Mac when doing this,
you will need to click on the smaller version of your screen in the pop-up
window and then click on share for your screen to be shared, Google has a
gallery view now this is the competing Zoom that you can change to when you
have multiple people on call To change the view click on the three dots in the
bottom bar and press Change Layout or if you do nothing, you must do that
Automatically switch to tile view When a certain number of people join the
three-dot menu call It is also related to settings where you can change the
sound and visual settings for Google Meet , I've already used both platforms
over the past year.
Use google Meet if you
only need a simple video call solution because it works well, it contains basic
features that you do not have to download an application for as long as
everyone has a google account it will work well with your situation and the
biggest additional feature now is to use Google Meet, there is no 40-minute
time limit for each meeting is 24 hours now, bear in mind that the time limit
will drop to 60 minutes come in September 2020. Now if you need to solve video
calls more advanced features like live broadcast or background replacement then
say yes you definitely want Use Zoom. It's the solution everyone has heard of
and it works well now if you've both used Google Meet and Zoom in, let me know
in the comments which platform you prefer and whether you liked that video and
found it helpful.
